Cake Display Fridge Buying Guide: Size, Curved vs Square Glass and Placement
Teilen
Quick answerFor most coffee shops, a 900mm countertop cake display fridge is the right size: wide enough for a real selection over three levels, while leaving room for a till and grinder. Choose 660mm for kiosks and small counters, 1200mm if cake is a major seller, square glass if you also display sandwiches, wraps or salads, and a rotating cabinet if you want movement to catch the eye. All should hold chilled cakes at 8°C or below.
A cake fridge sells as much as it stores. Customers buy what they can see, and a well-lit, well-stocked display can lift cake and dessert sales without anyone having to say a word. This guide covers the choices that matter: width, curved versus square glass, countertop versus floor-standing, and placement.
Choosing the width
Measure the counter first, then think about what else must share it: the till, card machine, grinder and a clear handover point. Leave ventilation space around the unit as shown in its manual. As a guide:
- 660mm: kiosks, small cafés and the end of a counter. Enough for a focused range of 6-10 lines.
- 900mm: the coffee-shop standard. A full selection across three levels without taking over the counter.
- 1200mm: dessert cafés, bakeries and shops where cake is a core product. Countertop units this wide are unusual, and avoid the jump to a floor-standing cabinet.
Curved vs square glass
Curved glass is the classic patisserie look. It frames cakes from the front, gives a softer, traditional appearance and suits cakes, cheesecakes and pastries.
Square (flat) glass looks squarer and more modern, and gives more usable height at the front of the deck. That makes it the better choice for mixed displays: sandwiches, wraps, sushi, salad pots and deli trays as well as cake.
Rotating cabinets turn the shelves slowly so every product is seen from every angle. They're eye-catching for dessert parlours but hold less than a wide counter unit.

Placement and running tips
- Keep it out of direct sun and away from heat. A fridge next to a window, oven or coffee machine works harder and fogs more easily.
- Load only once it's at temperature. Switch on, let it pull down to temperature, then load. Don't load warm product.
- Hold at 8°C or below. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, chilled food must be held at 8°C or below; Scottish guidance recommends 5°C or below. Check with a probe thermometer and record it.
- Don't overfill. Air needs to circulate around the products; packed shelves hold temperature less well and look less appealing.
- Clean the condenser regularly. Dust on the condenser is the most common cause of a fridge struggling to hold temperature.
Frequently asked questions
What size cake display fridge do I need?
For most coffee shops, 900mm. Go down to 660mm for kiosks and small counters, or up to 1200mm if cake and desserts are a major part of sales.
What temperature should a cake display fridge be?
Chilled cakes and desserts must be held at 8°C or below in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Keloo's GN display fridges run between 2 and 8°C.
Curved or square glass: which is better?
Curved glass gives the classic patisserie look for cakes. Square glass gives more usable height and suits sandwiches, wraps and deli items as well as cake.
Can I plug a countertop display fridge into a normal socket?
Yes. Keloo's countertop GN display fridges run from a standard UK 13A socket.
Why does my display fridge glass mist up?
Usually warm, humid air meeting cold glass: a busy shop, open door or nearby heat source. Keep the unit away from heat and steam, don't overload it, and keep the condenser clean.
